  • Welcome to Surlys blog!

Hello my name is Kenneth Jones and yes, I can be a little "surly".

    The best solution payday loans

    Surly the person:
I have a beautiful wife and two little boys. The three of us are kept company by our dog and cat and currently reside in Motor City.

    Surly the photographer:
Most of us go through life every day and forget to really look at what we see. There is magic everywhere in light, color, reflections, patterns. I try to capture that and show it in a way someone might not have noticed before.

How does one go about that? Have you ever seen how excited a toddler can be when looking at something, even something mundane, for the first time? That is a "beginners mind". I try to empty my cup (there isn't much in there anyway) and let the picture show me what to shoot. Sometimes it works and the times it doesn't make me a better photographer.

Yellow flowers in the afternoon sun

I drive by these a few times a day and have often thought I should come back and shoot here. Today all I had with me was my new 7D a 35 2.0 and, luckily a willing model. So we took a few minutes and shot some frames. I might have preferred a longer lens but you go with what you have and I have been trying primes mostly these days anyway. So here are a few shots. The last two I am undecided on which to keep. Smiling in photos always reminds me of Christmas pictures or something equally painful. Still I think I like the shot anyway even if its a bit goofy. We were having fun and it shows.

Heroin Chic

Maybe it’s not like a Calvin Klein advertisement.

Don’t get me wrong, I like fashion. Something about a different subject, a different venue and the absence of $1000 light modifiers has a simplicity (and an edge) that gets my mind working on a different channel.

Take an Atlanta Motel, some fast primes, tainted ambient and cooperative subjects and this is what you get.
